Dr. Amity Hardegree was named the 2021 Georgia Science Administrator of the year by the Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA) for her work in supporting excellent science teaching at West Jackson Elementary School and in leading the school toward state STEAM certification. Dr. Hardegree has worked tirelessly to ensure that West Jackson teachers have the support, professional learning, materials, and time needed to meaningfully integrate science with other subjects so that students will be well-rounded critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Ms. Carla Mitchell, West Jackson Elementary School’s art teacher, also received a $750 mini-grant from GSTA to support her “Creativity Garden” project. The garden will help WJES teachers integrate science and arts learning as part of the school’s STEAM program.
Dr. Hardegree and Ms. Mitchell will be recognized tomorrow, February 5 at 6:30 PM during the virtual Georgia Science Teachers Association awards banquet. Congratulations, Dr. Hardegree & Ms. Mitchell!

The Excellence in Service Award is given each month to individuals or groups who excel in supporting the vision and mission of Jackson County Schools. This month at the January 11, 2021 JCSS Board of Education meeting, we honored eight individuals who have gone above and beyond in their support of our schools, our current staff members, and our new hires.
Congratulations to Michelle Bowen, Glenda Campbell, Cat Flippen, Debbie Gammon, Amanda Hewell, Shannon Kendrix, Megan Perry, and Emily West!
This exceptional team is always seeking ways to improve the customer service they provide to the individuals they serve, whether it be through benefits, certification, payroll, or the recruitment and hiring process. This year, this outstanding team was recognized at the state level by the Georgia Association of Personnel Administrators (GASPA), with their Best in Class Gold Award, which is the second highest recognition that a system can receive for their work. The recognition received in December is based on their collective development and implementation this past spring of the New Employee Launch Pad, which is a site that has become a “one stop shop” for the onboarding of all Jackson County new hires. The Launch Pad provides easy access to onboarding tasks, New Teacher Orientation information, induction, technology resources, compliance, and HR contacts.
As a result of the team’s vision, we were able to pivot quickly when it became apparent we would not be able to hold our regular in-person onboarding and new teacher orientation sessions. Congratulations again to this stellar team for being this month’s Excellence in Service Award recipients.
